20 NFL superstars Notre Dame’s punter out-benched at his pro day

Punters are evolving. One year after Tennessee’s Trevor Daniel tied an NFL Combine record by putting up 23 reps in the bench press, Tyler Newsome blew that number out of the water by putting up 30 reps at Notre Dame’s Pro Day.

Newsome is as strong as Notre Dame’s tweet is obnoxious. As The Athletic’s Pete Sampson points out, those 30 reps would have been impressive even if Newsome played a position that required more strength.

The linebackers at the combine should not feel so bad about being weaker than a college punter. Here are some big NFL stars who were unable to put up 30 reps of 225 pounds when they attended the NFL Combine…

1. Saquon Barkley 29
2. Tyron Smith 29
3. Joe Thomas 28
4. Trey Flowers 28
5. David Bakhtiari 28
6. Luke Kuechly 27
7. Cameron Jordan 25
8. Zach Ertz 24
9. Le’Veon Bell 24
10. Gerald McCoy 23
11. Khalil Mack 23
12. Rob Gronkowski 23
13. Chandler Jones 22
14. Jadeveon Clowney 21
15. Von Miller 21
16. Ziggy Ansah 21
17. Leighton Vander Esch 20
18. Todd Gurley 17
19. Darius Leonard 17
20. Calais Campbell 16

Newsome is not expected to be drafted this spring but should have no problem getting a training camp invite. He might be able to pull double duty as the team’s strength and conditioning coach.
