Everyone roasted the bizarre new ‘Cats’ movie trailer

Published

on

The first trailer for Cats, the movie adaptation of the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber musical was released Thursday afternoon, and I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say it is totally freaking bonkers.

The trailer doesn’t make a lot of sense, yet this is not something you can lay at the feet of director Tom Hopper, since the musical upon which it is based also doesn’t make a lick of sense. For those unfamiliar with musical theater history, the show is about a bunch of cats running around, trying to decide which one of them will (SPOILER ALERT) die.

It’s a weird, weird musical with an operatic, self-important score (it’s Andrew Lloyd Webber, so duh) that’s almost certainly going to be a perplexing translation to film, but after all this is CATS. That’s what Cats is supposed to be. Perplexing and bizarre and campy and very much in love with it self. If that’s not what you came for, you didn’t come for Cats.

Still, there is one bright spot in this mess and that’s Jennifer Hudson’s incredible rendition of ‘Memory.’ The film, directed by Tom Hopper, also stars Taylor Swift, Idris Elba and Dame Judi Dench and will be in theaters around Christmas time.

Until then, please enjoy these reactions, ranging from scorn to befuddlement, that the great hive mind of the internet couldn’t wait to tweet.

Frankly, let this be on the head of T.S. Eliot. Just look at what Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats hath wrought.
